Forty three-bedroom, bungalow-style houses are taking shape at Onderneeming Tract A and B on the Essequibo Coast, marking the first time the Ministry of Housing and Water has built this style of home in Region Two.
Housing Minister Collin Croal visited the site on Friday to assess progress, accompanied by Regional Housing Officer Kavendra Persaud and Engineer Orlando Arno. Croal inspected the ongoing works and the standard of construction being undertaken by four contractors, each assigned 10 houses, with all 40 units targeted for completion in December.
The homes are being offered as part of a complete house-and-land package, with each three-bedroom house costing $10.5 million and the residential lot priced at $500,000, bringing the total package to $11 million.
Croal said the project is also expected to give the Ministry an indication of how applicants respond to the new house design and package, adding that the level of interest will be assessed as the Ministry considers whether the initiative can be expanded to more families in the region.
With construction under way, prospective beneficiaries will begin preparing for homeownership, including pre-qualification with commercial banks to determine their ability to secure financing.
Croal said he was pleased with the progress observed during the visit, while emphasising that the houses must be completed within the stipulated timeframe and to the required standard.
