The Guyana Women in Chess Community (GWICC), under the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF), on Saturday launched a girls’ chess camp in Region Three, aiming to expand female participation in the sport.
The one-day training session, held at the Leonora Stadium on West Demerara, brought together 21 girls and educators from schools including Leonora Secondary School and Qayyim Academy. Sessions ran from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., covering basic and intermediate chess instruction.
Participants were introduced to fundamental rules, checkmate patterns and tactical concepts, while more experienced players received advanced coaching. By the end of the session, organisers said all participants were able to play independently and had been provided with beginner booklets for continued learning.
The programme was led by Marcia Lee, with support from Candidate Master Taffin Khan, Woman Candidate Master Jessica Callender, and coach Nellisha Johnson.
The GCF said the initiative forms part of a broader effort to decentralise chess and establish school-based clubs across Region Three. It encouraged schools to integrate chess into extracurricular activities as part of its education drive.
The federation said it will continue its outreach this weekend with a youth chess training programme scheduled for May 9 and 10 at the same venue, open to both boys and girls.
