Team Shooters emerged victorious at the Prime Minister’s Annual One Guyana Dominoes Tournament on Tuesday, topping a competitive field in the finals held at Shanghai’s Residence in Amelia’s Ward, Linden.
Team Saddam placed second, while Team Turning Point finished third and Team Bottom End fourth. Navindra Kooblall of Team Shooters was named Most Valuable Player of the final, following a standout performance.
The event, which drew 48 teams from all 10 regions of Guyana, also featured three female teams and offered more than $2.5 million in prizes.
Participants travelled from as far as Mahdia in Region Eight, Bartica in Region Seven, and Lethem in Region Nine, underscoring the tournament’s national reach.
Prime Minister Mark Phillips, who attended alongside his wife Mignon Bowen-Phillips, said the annual competition continues to highlight the unifying role of sport in Guyana.
“This tournament has grown, and it is now an annual fixture, a premier dominoes tournament in Linden and Guyana,” Phillips said, adding that it fosters “camaraderie” and national cohesion through friendly competition.
He also said consideration is being given to introducing a dedicated female category next year, and suggested the tournament could eventually expand into a regional and international event as it continues to grow.
The tournament is organised by the Georgetown Dominoes Association in collaboration with Aubrey “Shanghai” Major, who hosts the event at his residence each year.
He thanked the prime minister for his continued support.
Team Storm was awarded Best Dressed Team at the event.
