Essequibo Coast resident Madalene Hill on Sunday celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends from across Guyana and overseas.
Hill, who was born in Good Hope on the Essequibo Coast, spent much of her working life in England, where she was employed in the healthcare sector and became known for her professionalism and compassion towards those in her care.
Her years abroad also afforded her the opportunity to travel widely.
After retiring, she returned to Guyana, where relatives say she has remained active and mentally alert. Even at 100, family members describe her as cognitively strong and lively.
Affectionately called “Aunty May”, Hill has long been regarded as a nurturing figure. Though she has no children, she played a significant role in the lives of many, particularly the children she cared for during her time in England.
She is now surrounded by nieces, nephews and an extended family who consider her a central figure.
The milestone occasion brought together relatives from various parts of the world, reflecting what family members say is the far-reaching impact she has had over the years.
Her sister, Marjorie Hill, described her as loving and selfless, while another sibling, Bill, now 90, expressed joy at seeing the family united to celebrate the rare milestone.
Prime Minister’s Representative Arnold Adams attended the event and conveyed greetings on behalf of the Regional Democratic Council, noting the significance of the occasion and extending best wishes for her continued well-being.
