The Guyana Press Association (GPA) has marked World Press Freedom Day 2026 with a call for journalists to “be fearless in the pursuit of their craft,” while reaffirming the indispensable role of a free and independent media in strengthening democracy, advancing human rights, and supporting sustainable development.
The GPA said press freedom remains a cornerstone of peace and accountability, describing this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” as both timely and relevant.
It noted that in Guyana, where democracy continues to evolve, press freedom is both a professional responsibility and a national imperative for stability and progress. The Association stressed that journalists must be able to operate in an environment free from fear and intimidation, with unhindered access to information.
The GPA called for the full operationalisation of the Access to Information Act, saying citizens are entitled to credible and transparent information as a basis for accountability and informed decision-making.
It also urged government, opposition, civil society and other stakeholders to work together to ensure official information is readily accessible to the public.
Warning against the misuse of technology to restrict information, the Association said such actions risk undermining freedom of expression and broader human rights.
The GPA added that journalism extends beyond news reporting to include features, documentaries and analysis that help explain issues and offer solutions, and renewed its call for sustained efforts to protect press freedom.
