Guyanese academic publishes book on AI governance in healthcare

Prominent Guyanese academic Dr Prem Misir has authored another publication, Ethics and Governance of AI in Healthcare, which examines how ethical and human rights considerations can be integrated into the use of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and automation in medicine and public health.
The book also takes a sociological perspective on the growing impact of AI, highlighting inequalities in its design and deployment across social groups, including issues of class, race, gender, and power imbalances in implementation.
“The book adopts a sociological perspective to assess the growing impact of AI on healthcare systems, while highlighting inequalities in its design and deployment across social groups. It points to issues of class, race, gender and power imbalances in the implementation of these technologies,” Dr Misir told Ignite News.
The publication, now available on Amazon, also reviews existing ethical standards in healthcare, including technical and sociotechnical biases embedded in AI systems, and examines current governmental approaches to regulating AI in medicine and public health. It concludes by proposing a sociological framework to strengthen AI governance and ensure greater integration of ethical and human rights considerations.
Dr Misir is Adjunct in the Doctor of Executive Leadership and Master of Public Health programmes at the University of Lynchburg, Adjunct in Sociology and Public Health at Trinity Washington University, and Advisor to the Ministry of Natural Resources, Government of Guyana. He previously served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Fiji; Pro Vice-Chancellor and Professor and Head of the School of Public Health at the Solomon Islands Campus of the University of the South Pacific; and Pro-Chancellor of the University of Guyana.
The book is published by Routledge, a global publisher of academic books, journals and online resources in the humanities and social sciences, and is part of Taylor & Francis, an Informa company.
