A police sergeant has been arrested after seven firearms and 68 rounds of ammunition went missing from a police station armory in Region 4, police said on Sunday.

The Guyana Police Force said the missing items were discovered during an audit at the Cove and John Police Station, which revealed the disappearance of four 9mm pistols and three .32 pistols.

Authorities said the discrepancy came to light during routine checks of exhibits and stored weapons. Despite further searches, the firearms and ammunition were not found.

The matter was escalated through the chain of command and the Office of Professional Responsibility has launched an investigation. Several statements have been taken and relevant records reviewed, police said.

The force said the sergeant remains in custody as investigations continue, adding that all necessary steps are being taken to recover the missing weapons and determine how they disappeared.
