Justice Damone Younge takes her oath to office

Justice Damone Younge was on Tuesday sworn in as a Justice of Appeal during a formal ceremony at the Office of the President.
The appointment follows a recommendation by the Judicial Service Commission and was made in accordance with Article 128(1) of the Constitution of Guyana.
With her swearing-in, the full complement of seven judges appointed to the Court of Appeal is now complete, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the country’s judiciary.
In his address, President Ali underscored the critical role of the appellate court within Guyana’s legal system, describing it as a defining pillar of justice and legal coherence.
He emphasised that the appellate court is where legal errors are examined without fear and where principles are refined through careful deliberation, ensuring that the law is given authoritative expression for generations to come.
“The Court of Appeal stands as the vigilant conscience of our legal system, its steady hand, its corrective voice and its enduring memory,” the President stated.
While extending congratulations to Justice Younge, President Ali noted that her elevation represents both a personal distinction and an institutional advancement.
“Your ascension marks not only a personal milestone of distinction but also a strengthening of our judiciary. Your appointment attests to the confidence we repose in your intellect, integrity and judicial temperament,” President Ali said.
The Head of State also reflected on the importance of the judicial system’s hierarchical structure, noting that it ensures consistency, order and legitimacy in decision-making.
He explained that higher courts provide authoritative interpretations that unify the law and guide lower courts, fostering public confidence in a system grounded in reason and coherence. He also spoke to the weight of responsibility that accompanies her new role.
“You now assume a role that demands not only legal acumen but also wisdom, restraint and a profound sense of responsibility. Your words will shape the contours of the law and influence the lives of countless citizens,” President Ali noted.
He further charged her with upholding the highest standards of fairness, consistency and responsiveness, reminding her that judicial authority must always be exercised with both firmness and humility.
Justice Younge now joins the distinguished ranks of the appellate bench, entrusted with safeguarding the rule of law and contributing to the continued development of Guyana’s legal system.
Justice Younge assumes office with effect from 14 April 2026, in the 57th year of the Republic of Guyana. (DPI)
