Venezuelan construction worker dies in Enmore accident

A Venezuelan construction worker died after an electric cycle he was riding collided with a car on Enmore Public Road on the East Coast of Demerara late Saturday night, police said.
Dead is Carlos Eliber, 34, a Venezuelan national who lived at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara. The accident occurred around 23:50 hrs and involved motor car PAN 5007 driven by a 25-year-old man of Blossom Scheme, Enmore.
Police said initial investigations indicate that the car was proceeding west along the southern driving lane of Enmore Public Road when the rider of the electric cycle reportedly rode across the road from north to south into the vehicle’s path.
The driver alleged that he swerved south and applied brakes in an attempt to avoid a collision, but the right-side front portion of the car struck the electric cycle.
As a result of the collision, Eliber was flung into the air and onto the roadway, sustaining multiple injuries. Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned and he was examined by a doctor attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, who pronounced him dead.
His body was later escorted to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said a breathalyzer test conducted on the driver recorded readings of 35 and 39 micrograms of alcohol in his breath.
The driver is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation, which remains ongoing.
