Vendors operating along the roadside at Suddie met on Tuesday with Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, to discuss plans for their relocation to the newly constructed Suddie Market, which is expected to accommodate more than 131 sellers.

The meeting allowed vendors to raise concerns and make recommendations regarding the operation of the new facility before they are relocated.
The minister was accompanied by Regional Chairman Devin Mohan, Prime Minister’s Representative Arnold Adams, Regional Executive Officer Susan Saywack, Ministry Engineer Raul Boyer, Regional Engineer Kawan Suchit, and Head of Markets at the ministry, Indrawattie Hirai.
Although the market building has been completed, Manickchand said several final works must be carried out before vendors can relocate. These include installing stalls and tables, improving ventilation, and completing other finishing works to ensure the facility is fully functional.
Once operational, the market will function in a more structured manner, with vendors assigned specific stalls and sections. The facility will also include designated areas for wet and dry goods — such as fish, poultry, vegetables and other produce — to maintain hygiene and improve organisation.
During the engagement, vendors raised several issues they would like addressed before the relocation.
One vendor, Sushma, said sellers have long hoped for a proper market facility and welcomed the progress made so far. However, she stressed that adequate ventilation and sufficient space should be provided to ensure the market is comfortable for both vendors and customers.
Another vendor, Juilet Narine, raised concerns about security, noting that vendors often leave goods and equipment at the market overnight and would feel more secure if proper security arrangements are put in place.
Manickchand said the concerns raised by vendors are being noted and that efforts will be made to address the outstanding issues before the relocation takes place.
She said the aim is for vendors to move into the new market within about six months, once the remaining works are completed.
The minister also said that markets across the country will eventually be equipped with garbage compactors as part of efforts to improve waste management and maintain cleaner surroundings.
The meeting forms part of the ministry’s ongoing engagement with vendors and stakeholders aimed at improving the organisation, sanitation and overall management of markets across the country.
