A Georgetown man has been sentenced to three years in prison and fined more than $8 million after being convicted of cocaine trafficking charges linked to a 2022 drug seizure, authorities said.
Winston Hazel was found guilty on Thursday of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking after appearing before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
He was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and ordered to pay a fine of $8,721,000 in relation to 5.814 kilograms of cocaine.
The case stemmed from an operation conducted in March 2022 by the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) in the Guyhoc Park, Tucville area of the capital.
According to CANU, officers intercepted a vehicle with two occupants during the operation. A search reportedly uncovered five parcels containing cocaine.
Hazel was subsequently charged and prosecuted in connection with the discovery.
