
Five men were detained by police on Friday in connection with an alleged simple larceny at a supermarket on La Bonne Intention Public Road, East Coast Demerara.
Police in Regional Division 4 ‘C’ said the incident occurred around 13:25, when two males allegedly removed eight packs of cheese valued at $8,640 and concealed them on one suspect’s person. The act was reportedly captured on the store’s CCTV system.
The suspects, along with other occupants of a motor vehicle, attempted to leave the scene but were intercepted by responding officers at Triumph Public Road, East Coast Demerara.
Those detained and escorted to the Beterverwagting Police Station include a 48-year-old construction worker of Campbellville, Georgetown (driver), a 35-year-old construction worker of Stevedore Housing Scheme, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, a 28-year-old of Section ‘C’, Sophia, East Coast Demerara, a 35-year-old gold miner of Princess Street, Lodge, Georgetown, and a 19-year-old stevedore of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
Police said a cutlass was recovered from the vehicle and has been lodged as evidence. Investigations are ongoing.
