Guyana signed a US$27.3 million contract on Friday with PowerChina International Group Limited for the development of a 60 MWh/30 MW Battery Energy Storage System, aimed at strengthening grid stability and supporting renewable energy integration, officials said.
The agreement, executed through Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL), covers the engineering, procurement and construction of the system, along with substation expansions and integration works.
Under the project, two 30 MWh/15 MW lithium-ion battery systems will be installed at the New Sophia and Goedverwagting substations in Region Four, adding 30 MW to the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System and improving reliability of electricity supply.
The systems will be integrated with the Guyana National Control Centre via modern SCADA, Energy Management and Automatic Generation Control systems. The project also includes spare parts, maintenance support and training for GPL engineers, and is expected to be completed within eight months.
Kesh Nandlall, Head of GPL’s Executive Management Committee, said the project marks a significant step in strengthening the country’s electricity infrastructure.
He said the Battery Energy Storage System will reduce outages, improve restoration through black start capability and support the integration of renewable energy in line with Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030.
GPL said the investment forms part of ongoing efforts to enhance the reliability, efficiency and sustainability of the national power system.
