GuySuCo to become agro-industrial hub

The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) is set to undergo significant mechanisation and modernisation as the government rolls out its ambitious five-year plan to transform the sugar industry into an agro-industrial hub with potential for value-added production.
Over 3,000 hectares of land will be converted this year, Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha said, stressing that the investment aims to safeguard employment while ensuring the survival of the historic industry.

“This investment will help to modernise our sugar factories and expand value-added production,” Mustapha said.
Mechanisation plans include the use of cane harvesters, conveyor systems, and upgraded sugar boilers. Mustapha noted that investor interest is growing, with commitments to establish refineries that will secure ready markets for GuySuCo’s output.
The government has allocated $13.4 billion for the sugar industry in its 2026 budget, up from last year’s allocation.
