Public consultation: City residents call for recycling programme, anti-squatting measures

Residents of Constituencies Five and Six are calling for a national recycling programme and stronger action on squatting, while urging the government to keep the public informed on ongoing drainage projects. The calls came during consultations led by the National Drainage Task Force aimed at improving flood resilience and environmental management.

The sessions, held at the C Field Community Centre and the University of Guyana basketball court, included participation from Turkeyen, Cummings Lodge, Atlantic Ville, Sophia, Liliendaal, C Field Sophia, and Pattensen. Residents shared recommendations such as stricter enforcement against squatting and a public relations campaign to keep citizens updated on drainage works.

Housing Minister Collin Croal outlined the first phase of the initiative, focusing on clearing parapets, rehabilitating key drainage channels, and beautification works. “We are facing the effects of climate change, including intense rainfall. To mitigate these challenges, we must also address the wanton dumping of garbage and work toward meaningful behavioral changes,” he said.

Minister within the Ministry Vanessa Benn emphasised community collaboration, saying the consultations allow residents’ concerns to be heard and acted upon before year-end.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to restore and strengthen drainage infrastructure across Georgetown, improve flood resilience, and enhance quality of life. Officials from the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA), National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), the Mayor and City Council, the Guyana Lands and Survey Commission, and the Ministry of Public Works were also present. NDIA Chairman Lionel Wordsworth delivered a technical presentation detailing drainage patterns, critical hotspots, and proposed engineering interventions.
