Smiles, tears, and laughter filled the air on the Essequibo Coast as four families began a new chapter in their lives — stepping into brand-new homes, gifts of hope and compassion from the Men on Mission (MoM) initiative.
For Yonette Sargeant of Pomona, Chandrawattie Narayan of Onderneeming Sandpit, Serojanie Bishewar of Walton Hall, and Donna Bridgemohan of Queenstown, the day marked the end of years of struggle and the start of something beautiful — comfort, dignity, and peace of mind under their own roofs.
The handing-over ceremony, held at Pomona, Region Two, was filled with joy as Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Madanlall Ramraj, led the presentation of keys. He was joined by Regional Chairman Devin Mohan, Regional Vice Chairman Humace Oodit, Deputy Regional Executive Officer Omesh Sasenaryan, and members of the Men on Mission team.
Also attending was Dr Josh Kanhai, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, who shared how President Dr Irfaan Ali’s vision continues to change lives through acts of kindness and unity.
“To date, 167 homes have been built through the Men on Mission initiative. Each home represents a new start — a step toward a brighter future,” Dr Kanhai noted.
Minister Ramraj lauded the teamwork and spirit of volunteerism that define the programme, announcing that another 12 homes will soon be constructed in Region Two with support from the business community.
“This initiative is about compassion and community,” he said. “It’s about ensuring that every family, regardless of their challenges, has a chance at happiness and stability.”
For Yonette Sargeant, a single mother of six, the joy was overwhelming.
“Before, we were all packed into a tiny space. Now, my children have their own rooms. We finally have a real home. I’m so thankful,” she shared with a smile.
Similarly, Chandrawattie Narayan and Donna Bridgemohan described the moment as “a dream come true,” while Serojanie Bishewar expressed gratitude for the kindness that made her new beginning possible.
