The sod was turned on Thursday for the Chateau Margot Mall, a landmark 110,000-square-foot development on the East Coast of Demerara by Trinidad-based conglomerate ANSA McAL. Envisioned as a vibrant centre for retail, dining, and entertainment, the mall will bring together international brands and local enterprises while preserving the historic Chateau Margot Chimney located nearby.
The mall will be constructed on private land adjacent to the iconic chimney, which the developers have pledged to protect and incorporate into the design. ANSA McAL Group Chairman Anthony Sabga emphasised the company’s commitment to safeguarding the landmark while advancing the project.
President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, who led the ceremony, said the investment demonstrates confidence in the country’s growing economy and urged that inclusive measures be adopted to support small and women-led businesses within the development. He also encouraged collaboration with the Guyana Marketing Corporation to ensure local products are showcased and that the benefits extend to the wider community.
“This project is more than a commercial development; it is a platform for enterprise and innovation,” President Ali said, adding that “It is a vote of confidence in our people and our economy.”
The project is expected to generate employment during both the construction and operational phases, with dedicated spaces for retail, dining, and entertainment. Officials noted that public areas will be designed to encourage participation from local vendors and small businesses.
Among the dignitaries present were Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan Edghill and Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Susan Rodrigues. Both government and developers highlighted that the initiative aligns with national policies promoting economic growth, entrepreneurship, and investment in infrastructure.
Construction planning is already under way, with government agencies and ANSA McAL coordinating on approvals, engineering recommendations, and heritage oversight. The project is expected to boost the East Coast corridor by generating employment, attracting investment, and providing expanded retail and leisure options.
Once complete, the Chateau Margot Mall will serve as a modern commercial and social hub—integrating retail, dining, and entertainment while preserving Guyana’s historic heritage and fostering local enterprise.
