Significant improvements at poultry processing facility following clean-up order

A poultry processing facility has shown marked improvements in sanitation following a seven-day Clean-Up Order issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) after an inspection revealed serious environmental and public health concerns.

EPA officers found the facility in unsanitary condition, with hygiene standards falling well below acceptable levels. Poor waste management at the rear of the premises produced strong odours affecting nearby residents, while walls inside were stained with dried blood and other biological residues, indicating inadequate cleaning and sanitisation protocols.

The Clean-Up Order required the operator to undertake comprehensive cleaning, implement proper waste disposal, and adopt enhanced hygiene measures to prevent further environmental nuisances.

A follow-up assessment, supported by feedback from the community, confirmed that the facility had made substantial improvements. One resident said: “The foul odours are gone, and the environment feels much cleaner,” while expressing concern over sustaining the improvements.

Photographs taken before and after the EPA intervention show a significant rise in sanitation standards. The agency has pledged continued monitoring to ensure ongoing compliance with hygiene and waste management requirements.

The case underscores the importance of consistent enforcement and accountability in safeguarding public health and the environment, reflecting the EPA’s mandate under the Environmental Protection Act, Cap. 20:05, to oversee environmental management and protection, particularly in industries with potential impacts on surrounding communities.
