Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) is seeking to recover $30,645,189 in losses after heavy-duty machinery operated by China Railway First Group (Guyana) Incorporated struck a key transmission line, causing widespread power outages.
The incident occurred at about 08:50 hrs on Sunday during road works at Dennis Street, Sophia, when the equipment came into direct contact with the L10 transmission line linking the New Georgetown and Sophia substations.
GPL said the disruption affected tens of thousands of customers across multiple communities, impacting households, businesses, and essential services.
The company has issued a formal notice to the contractor’s project manager, Ma Qiang, demanding full compensation within 14 days, failing which legal action will be pursued.
Law enforcement authorities have also launched an investigation, with one individual already arrested in connection with the incident.
GPL described the event as a serious breach of safety and operational requirements, stressing that works near electrical infrastructure must comply with established safety standards, including maintaining required clearance distances and coordinating with the utility.
The company warned that contact with electrical infrastructure poses a grave risk to life, with the potential for severe injury or death, as well as widespread outages and damage to critical systems.
GPL urged contractors and equipment operators to adhere strictly to all safety protocols when working near power lines, warning that violations will result in decisive action, including financial recovery and legal proceedings.
