A 55-year-old woman from Plantation Ross, West Coast Berbice, has been remanded to prison after being charged with the murder of her sister.
Allison Walters, of Lot 45 Plantation Ross, appeared on Tuesday before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the Blairmont Magistrates’ Court, charged with the unlawful killing of 72-year-old Barbara Crawford of Amelia’s Ward, Linden.
The charge alleges that on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at Plantation Ross Village, Walters unlawfully killed her sister. She was not required to enter a plea.
Prosecutor Sergeant Garfield Edwards informed the court that the case file remains incomplete and that further legal advice is being sought. Magistrate Matthias subsequently remanded Walters to prison. The matter was transferred to the Weldaad Magistrates’ Court and is expected to be called again on November 7.
According to a police report, the incident occurred after Walters’ brother, Roy Walters, who resides in the lower flat of the house, heard her shouting and went upstairs to investigate. Finding the doors locked, he contacted another brother, Lester Walters, for assistance. The men reportedly broke open the back door to enter the house.
Upon gaining entry, the accused allegedly grabbed a knife and charged at them, but they managed to disarm and restrain her. Moments later, they discovered Barbara Crawford motionless in a chair in the hallway.
Police were summoned to the scene and took Walters into custody after she refused to speak during questioning. She was later escorted to the Fort Wellington Police Station, where she was held pending investigations.
Investigators later learned that Walters is a patient at a mental health clinic in Canje, Berbice. Her daughter reportedly told police that during a phone call, her mother confessed to strangling and killing Crawford.
Police investigations are continuing.
