Ram Leela brings epic tale to life at Indian Cultural Centre

The Indian Cultural Centre in Georgetown came alive last night as audiences were treated to a stirring performance of Ram Leela, the timeless enactment of episodes from the ancient Hindu epic, the Ramayana.

Staged as part of the Centre’s cultural programming for the Navratri and Dussehra season, the production drew a large crowd who were captivated by the drama, music, and devotion on display.

The play unfolded across several scenes, beginning with the exile of Lord Rama, accompanied by his devoted wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. It traced the story through Ravana’s scheming and Sita’s abduction, Rama’s alliance with the monkey king Sugriva, and the climactic battles fought in Lanka.

The highlight of the evening came with Rama’s final confrontation with Ravana—a scene that combined vivid dialogue, dramatic staging, and powerful acting to convey the triumph of righteousness over tyranny.

Performers adorned in richly detailed costumes brought each character to life, from the nobility of Rama and the steadfast loyalty of Lakshmana to the anguish of Sita and the menacing presence of Ravana. Choreographed battle sequences, traditional music, and expressive dance further enhanced the staging, adding depth to the storytelling and keeping the audience fully engaged.

Audience members described the performance as “moving” and “culturally enriching.” Many noted the emotional resonance of Sita’s plight in captivity, as well as the moral lessons embedded in Rama’s journey. For members of Guyana’s Hindu community, the staging represented not only a religious observance but also a reaffirmation of cultural heritage.

The play forms part of a series of activities leading up to the symbolic burning of the effigy of Ravana, known as Ravana Dahan, which will mark the finale of this year’s Ram Leela observances. Organizers expressed hope that the production will continue to foster pride in Indo-Guyanese traditions while also inviting wider audiences to experience the moral and spiritual depth of the Ramayana.

As the curtains closed, the message of the evening rang clear: the victory of good over evil remains as relevant today as it was in the epic tale of Rama.
