The High Commission of India and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, in collaboration with Indian public sector undertakings operating in Guyana—including Bank of Baroda, Engineers India Limited, and RITES—commemorated the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on Wednesday.
A floral tribute ceremony was held at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Promenade Gardens, Georgetown, followed by a cleanliness initiative under the themes of #SwachhataHiSeva2025 and #SevaParv.
Delivering remarks at the ceremony, India’s High Commissioner to Guyana, Dr. Amit Telang, reflected on the enduring contributions of Gandhi and Shastri during India’s freedom struggle. He underscored the continuing relevance of their messages of peace, non-violence, self-reliance (Swadeshi/Aatmanirbharta), and moral leadership in today’s turbulent times.
The event highlighted the enduring cultural and historical ties between India and Guyana, with the diaspora and Indian institutions reaffirming their commitment to values of service and community responsibility.
