Mashramani 2026: Ministry aims for biggest, most Inclusive festival yet

Charles Ramson

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport on Wednesday officially launched preparations for Mashramani 2026, hosting a stakeholder engagement session aimed at setting the stage for what officials described as one of the largest and most inclusive cultural festivals in Guyana’s history.

Minister Charles Ramson Jr., joined by Minister within the ministry Steven Jacobs, emphasized that early planning and improved coordination are key to elevating the standard of the annual celebration. Speaking to float designers, performers, cultural groups, and regional coordinators, Ramson said
“If we’re going to make a decision to do something, we also have to make that decision that we’re going to do something well.”

A key announcement from the session was the ministry’s commitment to finalise contracts and funding for designers by October through mid-November, allowing creative teams sufficient time to source materials, design floats, and prepare costumes without the last-minute delays that have affected previous festivals.

The engagement also included strong calls for the revival of the Masquerade Competition, led by the Masquerade Association of Guyana.

Stakeholders stressed that masquerade is a vital expression of Guyanese tradition and should once again take pride of place in Mashramani. Minister Ramson welcomed the proposal but emphasized that the event must be executed to the highest standard, noting that past presentations sometimes lacked detail and consistency.

Minister Jacobs reinforced the government’s vision of Mashramani as a truly national festival, urging that events extend beyond Georgetown, with more regional concerts and platforms for emerging artists.

Officials highlighted that the early launch is also designed to attract diaspora participation, give vendors and performers more preparation time, and boost tourism during the Mash season. While the full calendar of events has not yet been finalised, Wednesday’s session signaled a strong push toward innovation, inclusion, and cultural pride.

With its focus on early planning, expanded activities, and the revival of traditions, organisers say Mashramani 2026 is already shaping up to be bigger, better, and electrifying.
