Guyana is moving to bolster its ability to detect and respond to health threats through the launch of the One Health Project, President Dr. Irfaan Ali has announced.
The initiative will focus on strengthening disease surveillance systems, upgrading laboratories to biosafety level three standards, and expanding the country’s human resource capacity for pandemic preparedness.
According to President Ali, the project represents a proactive step to ensure Guyana is ready to respond to future global health challenges.
“The aim is to enhance our disease surveillance, upgrade our laboratory system to a level three standard, and strengthen our human resource capacity through recruitment and training in pandemic preparedness. This is a global challenge, and every country is working to ensure they have the surveillance systems, labs, and human capital to identify and respond effectively to pandemics. We are not waiting — we are already investing in this system,” he said.
The initiative is part of wider efforts to modernize Guyana’s healthcare sector and align its preparedness measures with international standards.
