Government launches citywide cleanup campaign in Georgetown

The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development has officially launched a citywide cleanup campaign in Georgetown, part of the Government’s ongoing national beautification project.

The campaign was spearheaded on Tuesday evening by Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand, alongside Minister within the Ministry Pauline Sukhai, Director General Anand Persaud, Permanent Secretary Miguel Choo-Kang, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Administration) Dr. Josh Kanhai, and senior ministry officials.

As part of the exercise, Minister Manickchand visited Stabroek Market after 6:00 PM to engage directly with vendors. Vendors acknowledged their commitment to keeping their surroundings clean but highlighted challenges due to a lack of adequate resources and garbage disposal facilities. They noted that with proper support, littering in and around the market could be significantly reduced.

This campaign signals the Government’s intensified efforts to restore and maintain cleanliness across Georgetown, reinforcing its vision for a safer, more sustainable, and visually appealing environment for all residents.

The Ministry emphasized its commitment to working closely with stakeholders, vendors, and communities to ensure that residents are equipped with the necessary resources to practice effective waste management.
