Top Police officials visit CJIA amid allegations of bribery

Commissioner of Police and Chief Immigration Officer, Mr. Clifton Hicken, accompanied by Deputy Chief Immigration Officer, Senior Superintendent Stephen Telford, today visited the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) to meet and interact with immigration ranks.

The visit follows allegations that police officers at CJIA demanded money from a passenger in exchange for the release of her lawful items.

CCTV footage and other evidence support the claim. The officers implicated have been placed under close arrest while the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) conducts a full investigation.

In response, the Government of Guyana has mandated that, effective today, all law enforcement officers at airports and other border points must wear body cameras to improve accountability and transparency.

The Guyana Police Force reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on corruption. Any officer found guilty of extortion or bribery will face the full force of the law.

Members of the public are reminded that no payment is required to clear lawful items at CJIA or any other port of entry. Suspected demands for money should be reported immediately to the nearest police authority.
