Phase Two of Silica City to target diaspora investors

Work will soon begin on the second phase of Silica City, the country’s first smart and sustainable urban development, Housing Minister Collin Croal said on Wednesday.

The expansion will place special focus on attracting members of the diaspora, many of whom have expressed interest in returning and investing in modern housing. “Many persons from the diaspora have expressed interest. They want to return, and they are looking for this particular type of area. So here is an opportunity for us to engage with them,” Croal said.

While the first phase concentrated on single housing units, the second will include condominiums and townhouses to offer wider residential options. Applications will follow existing procedures, with eligibility tied to being Guyanese and a first-time homeowner.

Plans also include community and recreational amenities such as multi-purpose green fields, a golf course, walking and cycling trails, and nature play areas. Infrastructure like restrooms, recycling bins, bike racks and water fountains will support the development.

Located north of the Linden–Soesdyke Highway, about 40 km from Georgetown and near the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Silica City is designed to be climate-resilient and investment-friendly. Officials say it will combine modern infrastructure, sustainable practices and smart technologies to attract private sector investment and position Guyana as a regional leader in urban development.
