The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) will be in a position to make a final declaration of the September 1 vote once a recount of ballots for part of Region Four is completed, Government-nominated Commissioner Sase Gunraj has said.
GECOM began recounting ballots for sub-district Four on Thursday morning, following a request from the opposition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU). The recount, which covers 391 boxes from the East Coast Demerara, is being conducted at GECOM headquarters with 25 workstations and will continue uninterrupted until completion, the body said in a statement.
While GECOM has declared results for all 10 administrative regions, it has not yet formally announced the winning party. Statements of Poll show the incumbent People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) in the lead.
APNU and the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party have both indicated they will seek recounts in several regions. The Private Sector Commission said it was surprised by the requests but pledged its support, stressing that the process must be timely, efficient, and transparent to maintain public confidence.
