More boys in Guyana are reporting sexual abuse, but many still face barriers to seeking help due to entrenched social norms and limited trust, according to a recent study presented by research consultant Dominic Fernandes.
The findings were shared during Blue Umbrella Day 2026 activities hosted by ChildLink and are based on a qualitative study of boys aged 12 to 17 who accessed services at a Child Advocacy Centre.
The study found that trust and communication play a key role in whether boys feel safe to disclose abuse, with participants more likely to speak when adults listened without judgement and fostered supportive environments.
However, prevailing attitudes around masculinity continue to discourage disclosure. Some boys reported being told to “man up” or suppress emotions, reinforcing silence around abuse.
While reports of abuse among boys are increasing, engagement with counselling services remains inconsistent, pointing to gaps between identification and sustained support, the study found.
Fernandes said boys often favour alternative forms of engagement, such as activities and informal interactions, over traditional talk-based counselling.
The research also highlighted the limited presence of male caregivers in the lives of many participants, underscoring broader social challenges affecting emotional support systems.
Despite the small sample size, Fernandes said the consistency of responses signals the need for more inclusive, trust-based and flexible approaches to supporting boys affected by abuse.
