Smith strikes bronze at Junior Pan American Games

Keliza Smith secured a bronze medal for Guyana in the women’s 200m final at the Junior Pan American Games in Paraguay on Thursday evening.
Smith clocked 23.42 seconds, with the Dominican Republic’s Liranyi Alonzo taking gold in a championship record of 22.69 seconds, while Colombia’s Marleth Ospino claimed silver in 23.14 seconds.
Her time in the final was slightly slower than her semi-final performance of 23.08 seconds, which came close to the national record of 22.94 seconds.
Nevertheless, Smith’s bronze adds to Guyana’s tally of three medals so far, alongside swimmer Raekwon Noel (bronze) and the 4x400m mixed relay team (bronze). The country remains hopeful for further success, with Stafon Roach set to compete in the triple jump and the men’s 4x400m relay team also in action later.
