Fyrish man dies in accident

Alex Persaud, 23, of Timehri, died in a hit-and-run accident on Wednesday on the Supply Public Road, East Bank Demerara.

Police said the fatal crash involved motor lorry GAC 5784, driven by 30-year-old David Ragnauth of Kalicharran Road, Soesdyke Village, East Bank Demerara.

According to investigators, Persaud was heading south along the eastern side of the road after exiting motor lorry GAK 9080 when Ragnauth, driving south at a fast rate, collided with the front right side of GAK 9080 before hitting him.

Ragnauth failed to stop and fled the scene. Public-spirited citizens rushed the unconscious Persaud to the New Diamond Regional Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.

Police later found lorry GAC 5784 locked and abandoned at Sarah Johanna. Around 19:30 hrs the same day, Ragnauth was apprehended during a police operation at the Demerara Harbour Bridge overpass.

He is in custody at the Providence Police Station as investigations continue.
