More than 300 residents in Region Five received free spectacles during a distribution drive hosted by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security on Monday, bringing the gift of clearer vision to communities on the West Coast of Berbice.
The activity, which took place in Bath Settlement and Hopetown, is part of the Ministry’s broader mission to deliver essential services directly to citizens.
Human Services Minister Dr. Vindhya Persaud said the initiative, which began in 2021, remains focused on accessibility and care.
“So today, 180 persons benefited from spectacles here in Bath. Hopetown and surrounding areas received over 100 as well. We believe in taking services to the people—not waiting for them to come to us,” the minister said.
“Alongside spectacles, we also bring our child protection team, gender-based violence units, and others, to raise awareness about the servics so the public can access it,” she added.
Among the beneficiaries was Zoann John, a mother of two, who said the outreach resulted in significant savings for her family.
“I’m very happy because i saved alot collected for myself and my two daughters. I must thank the government, I benefited alot from it.”
For 61-year-old Sahai Harrigobin, the initiative eased a major financial burden.
“Me purchase $30,000 for this one about 5 years ago…me get on the govermernment one now.. if me had to purchase one it would’ve been very hard so me save alot. This saves me plenty.”
Single parent Rohanna Bankay also expressed gratitude.
“It would’ve cost me a lot, so I want to thank the government and everyone involved.”
In addition to spectacles, the outreach included the distribution of assistive aids such as wheelchairs and walkers to residents in need, ensuring that no one was left behind.
