As Guyana prepares for the hosting of the 2025 General and Regional Elections on September 1, the official Preliminary List of Electors (PLE) is expected to be available soon, followed by a Claims and Objections period.

This was affirmed by Vice President and General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo.

Speaking during his weekly press briefing at Freedom House today, Dr. Jagdeo said the elections process is moving forward despite challenges posed by Opposition-appointed elections commissioners.

“Right now, from what I’ve seen, there would be an update of the list, the PLE will be made available soon. There would be a period of Claims and Objections and then the OLE [Official List of Electors] will be published,” he stated.

Responding to a question posed by a reporter on if he sees the move by Opposition-nominated commissioners abandoning meetings disrupting the flow of elections and the electoral process, Dr. Jagdeo responded in the negative.

“We predicted this, that they were going to try to stymie the work of the Elections Commission, so that we can’t have the elections by September 1st. I doubt they will succeed. Because the Commission has already laid out the plan and there is a provision, where if they don’t show up the Commission can convene another meeting 48 hours later and then whether they turn up or not, proceed with its work. So, I hope they show up to discuss the matters… I don’t see them being able to disrupt the preparations for the elections,” he noted.

Dr. Jagdeo further indicated that the PPP will soon have a public consultation for its manifesto.

“We plan to have a public consultation on the manifesto…it will be to the end of the month. We’re not rushing to put it out because we already know many of the things that we intend to do but we want to make sure that we get additional feedback,” he said.

Dr. Jagdeo also urged members of the public to attend consultations and share their views on the way forward.
