French President Emmanuel Macron has extended warm congratulations to Guyana on the occasion of its 60th Independence anniversary, while reaffirming France’s strong commitment to the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in accordance with international law.
In a formal letter to President Irfaan Ali, Macron underscored what he described as France’s particular attachment to its partnership with Guyana, pointing to shared regional priorities within the Guiana Shield, where both countries cooperate on issues including peace, regional stability, and the promotion of human rights.
He also referenced the ongoing proceedings before the International Court of Justice concerning the Essequibo territorial controversy, reiterating France’s position of respect for international legal processes while reaffirming support for Guyana’s sovereignty.
Macron further highlighted the strengthening of bilateral relations following the official opening of France’s Embassy in Georgetown on September 1, 2025, noting that the development has helped deepen diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
Looking ahead, the French President expressed optimism about the conclusion of several draft agreements currently under negotiation between France and Guyana, particularly in the areas of justice, security, and defence cooperation.
He also welcomed the participation of French Armed Forces based in French Guiana in activities marking Guyana’s Independence celebrations, describing it as a reflection of growing regional collaboration.
Macron concluded his message by extending assurances of his highest consideration to President Ali, reinforcing what both sides have increasingly described as a strengthening and forward-looking bilateral relationship.
