Young Officer Cadet makes history as first woman to gain prestigious Sandhurst selection Eighteen-year-old Officer Cadet Fianna Maria Tading has made history as the first woman in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) to be selected for training at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom. Tading, who is five months into the GDF’s Standard Officer Course #58 earned the opportunity through her excellent performance during the rigorous officer training programme. For the young cadet, the historic achievement represents both a personal milestone and an important step towards her goal of becoming a military officer. “The opportunity was unexpected, but I am extremely grateful. I see it as an important step towards becoming a military officer. I intend to give my best, learn as much as I can and return better prepared to serve the GDF and share what I have learnt,” she said. Originally from Moruca, Region One (Barima-Waini), and now living at Strathspey, East Coast Demerara, Tading attended Bladen Hall Multilateral School. She says her decision to pursue a military career was influenced by a teacher who recognised her potential and encouraged her to apply for the Standard Officer Course. Tading said her determination is also shaped by her upbringing and her desire to create better opportunities for herself and her sisters. “Life was a bit tough for us growing up, and I always wanted a better future for myself and my sisters. When I learnt how challenging the officer course was, I decided that it was a challenge I wanted to take on,” she said. As she prepares for the next stage of her military development in the United Kingdom, Tading hopes her achievement will inspire more young Guyanese, especially women, to consider serving in the GDF. She encouraged young people who are willing to work hard to challenge themselves and serve Guyana by considering a career in the GDF.

Two men are now hospitalised in stable condition following a reported exchange of gunfire in Sophia on Monday night.

The victims have been identified as 34-year-old Andra Stewart, an unemployed man from Guyhoc Park and Fifth Street, Alberttown, and 22-year-old Lidj Grant, a construction worker of ‘A’ Field, Sophia.

According to police, the incident occurred around 21:45 hrs on May 20, in the vicinity of the Mercy Wing Vocational Centre, ‘A’ Field, Sophia. Stewart sustained a gunshot wound to his right lower back, while Grant was wounded in the right upper back.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the two men were riding separate motorcycles when they were approached by two unidentified men on another motorcycle. The suspects, who were dressed in dark clothing and wore face masks, allegedly opened fire on the victims.

Stewart and Grant reportedly jumped off their bikes and took cover behind a parked truck, while the suspects fled the scene.

Public-spirited citizens rushed the injured men to a city hospital, where they were examined and admitted.

Police arrived at the scene around 22:00 hrs and recovered 15 suspected 9mm spent shells. Investigators also reviewed CCTV footage, which revealed an exchange of gunfire between the suspects and the victims. As part of the investigation, both Stewart and Grant were swabbed for gunpowder residue.

Several persons in the area were questioned, but the suspects remain at large. Investigations are ongoing.
