The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) extends greetings to all Guyanese on Arrival Day 2025.
This national holiday marks another significant chapter in the rich and complex history of our ancestors who journeyed to these shores. The arrival of hundreds of thousands of indentured labourers to British Guiana from distant lands unintentionally contributed to the country’s rich diversity and cultural landscape.
Although our East Indian ancestors first arrived on this day in 1838, other ethnic groups also came during that century, bringing with them customs and traditions that would later blend into the unique fabric of the Guyanese nation. We became, inevitably, one country made up of many cultures.
The presence of diverse cultures, customs, and religions is the essence of Arrival Day. Yet, this commemoration is deeply rooted in the sacrifice, deprivation, and struggles of our foreparents. Despite these challenges, Guyana’s multi-ethnic identity has endured into the 21st century, marked by increasing levels of appreciation and acceptance.
The ERC’s mission is to bridge cultural and ethnic divides, offer support, and address challenges to achieving ethnic harmony. The Commission therefore urges all Guyanese to embrace our diversity this Arrival Day as the foundation of our collective strength—giving deeper meaning to our national motto.
It is also incumbent upon every citizen to honour and remember the yeoman service of those who came over a century ago and contributed to our shared heritage. As one nation, we can continue our collective mission to pursue a brighter future and realise that one destiny on the horizon.
Happy Arrival Day!
