A 20-year-old woman is dead and her partner critically injured following a suspected gas bottle explosion that occurred early today.
The deceased, Mezona Ronaldo, of Amerindian descent, was reportedly cooking at her Moblissa, Linden Highway home around 00:30 hrs when the gas bottle allegedly caught fire. Her reputed husband, 34-year-old Kevin Cadogan, is said to have rushed to her aid and sustained severe burns in the process.
The couple, both badly injured, reportedly alerted Cadogan’s mother, Patricia Williams, 55, who resides in Adventure on the Linden Soesdyke Highway. She told police that she was awakened by her son’s cries for help around 01:30 hrs and found both him and Ronaldo with visible burns.
Williams said she immediately secured a taxi and transported the injured pair to the Mackenzie Hospital, where they were seen by a doctor and referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for advanced care.
Ronaldo succumbed to her injuries while receiving medical attention at GPHC. Cadogan was admitted in critical condition.
Detectives from Regional Divisions 4B and 10 visited the scene of the incident around 13:00 hrs on Friday. Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to determine the exact cause of the blaze.
