The Guyana Police Force on Sunday rejected allegations of a cover-up in the investigation into the killing of seven-year-old Adriel Aftab Mohamed, warning against what it described as reckless attempts on social media to discredit investigators probing the shocking attack in Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo.
The Force was responding to claims made in a social media video by “Melly Mel”, who alleged that the investigation was being manipulated and improperly handled.
In a statement, police described the allegations as “reckless and unfounded” and rejected suggestions that Detective Senior Superintendent M. Caesar, one of the senior officers assisting with the investigation, had engaged in any improper conduct.
Police said the claims were “patently false” and accused the social media commentator of attempting to mislead the public, attack the reputation of a senior investigator and create distrust while investigations remain ongoing.
The Force said Detective Senior Superintendent Caesar, whom it described as a senior and experienced investigator, has always carried out his duties professionally and lawfully.
According to the statement, Caesar was adjudged Best Cop of the Guyana Police Force on two occasions and was also runner-up in the Caribbean Top Crime Fighter awards in 2017.
Police said any attempt to malign his character or undermine his role would be strongly condemned.
The Guyana Police Force further assured the public that the matter is being thoroughly investigated and that all lawful lines of enquiry are being pursued.
Members of the public were urged to avoid spreading unverified claims and to rely only on official updates from the Guyana Police Force.
Police have since confirmed the arrest of a 23-year-old farmer in connection with the alleged murder and attempted murder. The suspect, who is from Zeelugt New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, remains in custody and is assisting with investigations.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
