Attorney General Anil Nandlall has criticised the Alliance for Change (AFC) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) for prioritising the spoils of government over their contributions to the people of Guyana.
The two parties are currently negotiating the terms of their partnership ahead of the upcoming national elections later this year.
During his Issues in the News program on Tuesday, Nandlall accused the former coalition partners of focusing more on dividing government benefits rather than developing strategies to address the issues they have repeatedly criticized the government for.
“You would expect these two parties to sit down, and the first item on the agenda would be their development plan for the Guyanese people—how, if they win the government, they would eradicate poverty, which they talk about so much, and how they would address all the issues they keep criticizing the government over.”
Instead, Nandlall argued that discussions have largely revolved around how the spoils of government would be shared, with the interests of the people taking a back seat.
“I thought they would have told us how they plan to attract investments, reduce crime and unemployment, and fulfill the many promises they keep making. But their first task at the table is deciding how they will divide the government,” Nandlall said.
According to Nandlall, public statements made during negotiations reveal that the true intentions of these parties are more about securing power than improving the lives of the Guyanese people.
