The Guyana Poultry Producers Association (GPPA) is seeking government approval for the temporary importation of chicken to help meet rising demand amid a decline in local production, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha said on Tuesday.
GPPA representatives raised the request during a meeting with Mustapha at his office, citing market trends showing falling production levels alongside increased demand for chicken.
They said the measure would help maintain stable market prices during the period of reduced supply, adding that importation would no longer be necessary once local production returned to normal levels.
Mustapha said the request would be carefully considered, with any decision made in the interest of consumers, poultry producers and the overall sustainability of the industry.
