The Strathspey Bridge on the Railway Embankment along the East Coast of Demerara has been reopened to light vehicular traffic from 06:00 hrs today.
This was confirmed by Public Works Minister, Bishop Juan Edghill, who visited and inspected the bridge.
The minister emphasised that trucks are not permitted to traverse the railway embankment.
The bridge had been closed to facilitate construction after a portion of it collapsed last Thursday, due to a truck driving over a dilapidated section.
Minister Edghill visited the site and announced that necessary traffic diversions would be put in place.
However, due to heavy congestion along the East Coast corridor, the ministry announced on April 1 a temporary fix using precast concrete slabs, with a commitment to reopening the bridge within 48 hours.
The rehabilitation works on the temporary structure were carried out by H. Nauth and Sons.
Additionally, the ministry is undertaking urgent repairs to Coldingen and Bladen Hall School Roads to improve traffic flow in the area.
