Tristan Saphan Franklyn, a 26-year-old labourer from Friendship Village, East Bank Demerara, was arrested by police today after he was found to be in possession of suspected forged Guyana currency notes.
According to a police report, at around 07:59 hrs this morning, Althea Peters, a 44-year-old customer services representative and cashier at Banks DIH Limited, Brickdam and Cornhill Street, Stabroek Georgetown, reported that Franklyn had visited her workplace to purchase both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
She stated that he then paid her $80,000 in Guyana currency, all consisting of five thousand-dollar notes. Upon checking the money, she observed that it appeared to be counterfeit. She handed over the money to a police officer at the Stabroek Outpost, after which she identified Franklyn to the police, and he was arrested.
The officer searched a black haversack that Franklyn was carrying and discovered $180,000, which consisted of five thousand-dollar bills, all suspected to be forged.
The police officer took possession of the Guyana currency notes, arrested Franklyn, and escorted him to Brickdam Police Station, where he was placed in custody.
The suspected forged currency notes were placed in an evidence bag, marked, sealed, and lodged to be sent to the forensic laboratory for analysis. Investigations are ongoing.
