Mae’s students preparing for NGSA, CSEC to get assistance

A massive fire broke out this morning at Mae’s Schools in Subryanville, Georgetown, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky, visible from a great distance away. The blaze, which quickly consumed large sections of the school’s building, left the community in shock. All students and teachers were safely evacuated before the fire spread uncontrollably.
At the scene, a large crowd of onlookers, including students, teachers, and concerned parents, stood along the streets, watching as firefighters worked tirelessly to battle the flames. The damage was extensive, and despite the efforts of the fire department, it became clear that the building was beyond saving.
Among those present at the scene was the Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand. Speaking to the media, she described the situation as “very sad,” pointing out that Mae’s Schools have contributed immensely to the country, academically and in various other spheres.
Minister Manickchand reassured the public that the Ministry of Education will be taking steps to ensure that affected students would not lose valuable time in their educational journey.
“We are in contact with other schools, and discussions are already underway to find placements for the students preparing for the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) and the Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) exams,” she said.
Also present at the scene was Ms. Fazia Baksh, the Deputy Chief Education Officer for School Support.
Ms. Baksh spent much of her time speaking with parents, teachers, and students, offering words of comfort and support. “We will get through this, parents and teachers,” she assured those gathered.
She said the Ministry of Health has extended a helping hand of support during this difficult time, offering psychological support to those affected by the traumatic event.
Minister of Human and Social Security, Dr Vindhya Persaud along with the Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn were also at the scene to offer their support. Standing with the teachers, parents, and students, they expressed their solidarity during this difficult time.
“We stand with you today, and we will do everything in our power to support the school, its staff, and the students as they rebuild and recover,” Minister Benn said.
