Girl, 19, dies in accident

Nineteen-year-old Annalisa Smith lost her life in a tragic accident on Wednesday, when the car she was traveling in crashed into a Guyana Power and Light (GPL) utility pole on the Berbice River Bridge Access Road.

The fatal collision occurred around 12:20 hours and involved motor car #PSS 6725, which was driven by 21-year-old Clifton Smith, a provisional license holder.

The vehicle was carrying five passengers: Smith (now deceased), Marlyn Jones, 60; Odessa Smith, 49; and Simon Gomes, 43.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the car was traveling west along the southern drive lane at a high speed when Smith lost control and slammed into the utility pole.

Public-spirited citizens rushed to assist the injured passengers, pulling Annalisa Smith, who was seated in the rear left seat, from the wreckage in an unconscious state.

She was placed in an ambulance and transported to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where Dr. Jhagru pronounced her dead on arrival.

The other occupants of the car sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.

Smith, the driver, is in police custody assisting with investigations.

Annalisa Smith’s body has been placed at the hospital’s mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
