Young Officer Cadet makes history as first woman to gain prestigious Sandhurst selection Eighteen-year-old Officer Cadet Fianna Maria Tading has made history as the first woman in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) to be selected for training at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom. Tading, who is five months into the GDF’s Standard Officer Course #58 earned the opportunity through her excellent performance during the rigorous officer training programme. For the young cadet, the historic achievement represents both a personal milestone and an important step towards her goal of becoming a military officer. “The opportunity was unexpected, but I am extremely grateful. I see it as an important step towards becoming a military officer. I intend to give my best, learn as much as I can and return better prepared to serve the GDF and share what I have learnt,” she said. Originally from Moruca, Region One (Barima-Waini), and now living at Strathspey, East Coast Demerara, Tading attended Bladen Hall Multilateral School. She says her decision to pursue a military career was influenced by a teacher who recognised her potential and encouraged her to apply for the Standard Officer Course. Tading said her determination is also shaped by her upbringing and her desire to create better opportunities for herself and her sisters. “Life was a bit tough for us growing up, and I always wanted a better future for myself and my sisters. When I learnt how challenging the officer course was, I decided that it was a challenge I wanted to take on,” she said. As she prepares for the next stage of her military development in the United Kingdom, Tading hopes her achievement will inspire more young Guyanese, especially women, to consider serving in the GDF. She encouraged young people who are willing to work hard to challenge themselves and serve Guyana by considering a career in the GDF.

President Dr Irfaan Ali has expressed deep concern for the well-being of the Defence Force soldiers who were injured in Monday’s attack on a military patrol.

“I had the opportunity to speak with 2LT Ansel Murray, SGT Andre Frazer, SGT Kevon Davis, CPL Kevin Henry, LCPL Troy Yorrick, and PTE Ezra Samuel. I expressed my gratitude for their service at our borders and assured them of the nation’s support and my concern for their well-being,” he said in a Facebook post this morning.

He noted that the injured soldiers are in good spirits and that an army Bell 412 helicopter is en route to conduct a medical evacuation (MEDIVAC).

“Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families,” he added.

Police, in a statement on Monday night, said the attack is suspected to have been carried out by the Sindicato gang, and an investigation into the incident is currently ongoing.

As part of its efforts to maintain security, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has strengthened its presence in the area to safeguard both its troops and the territorial integrity of Guyana.

A GDF statement emphasised the Army’s commitment to protecting the nation’s borders and addressing any threats to national security.

The situation is under close monitoring, with further updates expected as more information becomes available. The GDF has also assured the public that the safety and well-being of its personnel remain the top priority.
