GDF mobilises to reinforce presence following armed attack near Venezuelan border

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has mobilised to reinforce its presence along the Cuyuni River after an armed attack on a resupply patrol on Monday.

According to a GDF statement, the patrol, en route from Eteringbang to Makapa, came under fire from a group of armed individuals positioned on the Venezuelan bank of the river.

In response, the GDF patrol engaged the assailants in an exchange of fire. Several members of the patrol sustained gunshot injuries during the confrontation.

Police in a statement confirmed the injured personnel as Second Lieutenant Ansel Murray, who was shot in the right side of his head; Sgt Kevon Davis, who was shot in the right foot and ankle; Cpl Andrew Fraser, who sustained gunshot wounds to his abdomen and shoulder; Cpl Kevin Henry, who was injured in the left arm and shoulder; L/Cpl Travis Yorrick, who was shot in the right thigh; and Private Ezron Samuel, who was wounded in the right side of his abdomen.

Despite their injuries, all personnel were conscious and stable at the time of the incident.

The attack is suspected to have been carried out by the Sindicato gang. An investigation into the incident is currently ongoing, police say.

As part of its ongoing efforts to maintain security, the GDF has strengthened its presence in the area to safeguard both its troops and the territorial integrity of Guyana.

The GDF statement emphasised the Army’s commitment to protecting the nation’s borders and addressing any threats to national security.

The situation is under close monitoring, with further updates expected as more information becomes available.

The GDF has also assured the public that the safety and well-being of its personnel remain the top priority.
