Mining communities across Guyana came alive with games, competitions and camaraderie as the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) hosted its annual Pork Knockers Day celebrations as part of Mining Week 2026.
The nationwide activity brought together GGMC staff, residents and small-scale miners in recognising the hard work and contribution of Guyana’s mining community to the development of the sector.
Participants took part in a full day of activities, including traditional gold-panning and nugget-search competitions, shovelling contests, dominoes, cricket and football.
Prizes, giveaways and awards added to the excitement, while providing an opportunity for miners and residents to interact in a relaxed community setting.
Pork Knockers Day also highlights the importance of small miners, whose work remains an integral part of Guyana’s mining industry and the wider economy.
Celebrations were held in mining communities across several regions.
In Region One, activities were held in Matthews Ridge, while Region Seven hosted celebrations in Bartica, Puruni, Imbaimadai, Issano and Tamakay.
Mahdia was the host community in Region Eight, with Aishalton hosting activities in Region Nine.
Through Pork Knockers Day, the GGMC says it continues to honour miners while promoting community engagement and celebrating the rich traditions and culture associated with Guyana’s mining communities.
