The government is stepping up efforts to modernise waste management by developing new sanitary landfill sites across the country’s 10 administrative regions.

The initiative is aimed at addressing challenges from rapid housing expansion, urbanisation and population growth, while improving public health and environmental protection.

Ministers Priya Manickchand (Local Government), Collin Croal (Housing), and Vanessa Benn (Housing and Water) met with senior officials, including Lands and Surveys Commission CEO Enrique Monize, to assess potential landfill locations and review current practices.

Discussions focused on population density, land availability, accessibility, and environmental impact, as well as the shortcomings of existing landfill systems.

“Effective landfills are not just about waste disposal, they are about safeguarding public health and protecting natural resources,” Manickchand said. She added that the project will be pursued with urgency and inter-agency coordination.

Croal said modern waste systems must accompany new housing developments, while Benn underscored the need for joint responsibility across ministries.

The Ministry of Local Government said technical assessments and stakeholder consultations will continue in the coming months to ensure the projects are implemented transparently and sustainably.
