Guyana reaffirms support for two-state solution, urges global pressure on Israel at UN Security Council

Guyana on Tuesday reaffirmed its support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and called for stronger international action to end Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory.

Foreign Minister Hugh Hilton Todd told the UN Security Council that “an equally strong and organised international response” was needed to dismantle the occupation, comparing it to the collective effort that ended apartheid in South Africa. He urged all UN member states to recognise Palestine, saying such recognition would strengthen global pressure on Israel.

Todd accused Israel of “genocidal acts” in Gaza and urged countries to ensure their dealings with Israel do not prolong the war or “the oppression of the Palestinian people.” He also condemned Israel’s failure to comply with a UN General Assembly deadline to end its occupation by September 18, 2025.

Guyana reiterated its call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages and detainees, and unimpeded humanitarian access. Todd concluded that respect for international law and the UN Charter was essential to securing lasting peace in the Middle East.
