As the warm glow of diyas illuminates homes and communities for Diwali, President Irfaan Ali is encouraging Guyanese to reflect on the blessings of nature and the responsibility to protect the country's rich environmental heritage for generations to come.
In his Diwali message to the nation, the President said the festival's celebration of light overcoming darkness, wisdom dispelling ignorance and goodness triumphing over evil carries a deeper reminder of the connection between humanity and the natural world.
“Diwali's reverence for light invites reflection on the gifts of nature that sustain all life,” Ali said, noting that human health, prosperity and happiness are inseparable from the environment.
He urged Guyanese to recognise that as the country enjoys growing economic opportunities and prosperity, its natural inheritance must not be sacrificed in the pursuit of development.
“True prosperity is measured not only by what we create, but by what we preserve. Our emerging prosperity must never be purchased at the expense of our extraordinary natural inheritance,” he said.
The President pointed to Guyana's forests, which cover approximately 85 per cent of the country's landmass, as well as its biodiversity, freshwater resources, mangroves and marine ecosystems, as valuable assets that must be safeguarded.
He said Guyana, recognised internationally for its environmental stewardship, must continue demonstrating that economic development, improved living standards and environmental protection can advance together.
Ali further called for a stronger sense of responsibility towards the natural environment, emphasising that the true measure of a nation's greatness must also include the legacy it leaves for future generations.
“A nation's greatness must be reflected not only in the opportunities it creates for those living today, but in the environmental legacy it secures for generations yet unborn,” he said.
He encouraged citizens to embrace a lasting commitment to protecting the country's forests, rivers, biodiversity and oceans, describing them as more than natural resources, but the foundations of life and human well-being.
The President extended warm Diwali greetings to all Guyanese, particularly the Hindu community, wishing the nation a Happy and Holy Diwali.
